Watermillock has a fascinating and turbulent history.
Watermillock House was a mansion owned by TM Hesketh, a mill owner, in the later 1800s. After it was no longer used by the family, the mansion developed an interesting and varied history.
It was used as a military hospital in the first world war after there were so many casualities that increasing numbers of hospitals had to be opened to cope with the number of injured. Hospitals were run by the red cross, and Watermillock became a hospital for pilots with horrific burns, among other casualties.
In 1937, it was used as a hostel for refugee children evacuated from Bilbao in the Spanish Civil War. They stayed in the house for about a year, and then the majority of them went home to Spain. Whilst the children were there, many people did their best to make them feel supported and cared for. Moneys were raised by colleges, schools and universities to put into the fund supporting them. A local girl from Bolton also invited some of the children along to her 14th birthday party.
